What is AVIF?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, AVIF offers even better compression than WebP while maintaining excellent image quality.
Key Features of AVIF
- Superior Compression: 50% smaller than JPEG, 20% smaller than WebP
- High Quality: Better image quality at equivalent file sizes
- Modern Features: HDR support, wide color gamut, 10/12-bit color depth
- Transparency: Full alpha channel support
- Animation: Supports animated images
- Open Standard: Royalty-free, no licensing fees
AVIF vs WebP vs JPEG
Compression comparison for the same visual quality:
- JPEG: 100KB (baseline)
- WebP: 70KB (30% smaller)
- AVIF: 50KB (50% smaller)
Browser Support
- Chrome: Supported since version 85 (2020)
- Firefox: Supported since version 93 (2021)
- Safari: Supported since version 16 (2022)
- Edge: Supported since version 121 (2024)
Note: Browser support is growing but not yet universal. Always provide fallbacks.
When to Use AVIF
AVIF is ideal for modern web applications where maximum compression is needed. However, always provide WebP and JPEG fallbacks for older browsers.
